“Why is it everywhere you look, top psychologists and doctors are still teaching outdated methods for treating general anxiety and panic attacks?”
Every time I do some research, there is another “expert” repeating the same old ideas…
Breathe into bags, stay positive, keep breathing etc. I mean, you must have seen it yourself a million times already.
You can’t teach people how to stop panic attacks forever if they are only shown these techniques and methods that only teach people to cope with anxiety.
Simply coping is not what we want. We want real solutions!
I want to share with you something that does work, something that will help you to stop feeling anxious now.
This is something I learnt from Barry Mcdonagh, the author of Panic Away, and it’s something that I found to possibly be the best way to stop a panic attack. It’ll show you how to stop an anxiety attack fast.
This is an easy way to remove the fear of a PANIC ATTACK.
I found this to be a great exercise for people who need something more practical to focus on when they feel the pressure of a panic attack building.
It’s so simple. Here we go…
The 20 Second Countdown
When you start to feel the sensations of a panic attack, try this…
Tell the panic feeling it has 20 seconds to give you a full panic attack. 20 seconds, that’s it, not a moment more. Once the 20 seconds are up, it must stop making these ridiculous, empty threats.
You are giving 20 seconds to your panic so it can do it’s worst but not a second more.
Whatever sensation you fear, it must happen within that 20 second time frame.
- If it’s going to make your heart explode out of your cheat, then it has 20 seconds.
- If you are going to lose your mind, then you have 20 seconds.
- If you are going to faint or worse – 20 seconds! But that’s all the time you will allow!
By giving a strict time frame you establish a lot more control and power. You’re forcing you panic to show it’s bluff.
If it were a game of poker, you are “calling” anxieties bet and it must show it’s hand. However, anxiety and panic attacks only ever have a bluff.
This works because it allows you to reclaim control within your mind and body. This can already help you to stop feeling anxious.
Just think to yourself, “there’s no way I’m prepared to waste my time worrying about this…
I’ve had enough. I will be generous and give it 20 seconds to do it’s worse, but after that time, when nothing has happened then that’s it, I’m going to go back to what I was doing.”
Then just start counting -but nice and slowly, don’t rattle it off as fast as you can. Remember you’re the boss, you’re in control. Really tease it out like you never want to get to zero.
Taking your time is the key because it allows you to become a generous boss, and you are offering anxiety every chance possible to make it’s move.
Deep down, you know there is nothing to fear.
To tease it out, break the last few numbers into fractions. Really give it a chance to do it’s worst.
2…and three quarters…
1…and three quarters… last chance…
1…and half……………… I really cant wait any longer
Sorry that’s it, times up.
By not racing all the way down to zero, you will feel your confidence soar!
You are demonstrating real control and authority over your anxious thoughts and bodily sensations. That is a big step in the right direction
You basically telling your anxiety, “come on, I am really trying to give you a chance here to attack me with your worst X,Y, and Z, I am being very generous here by giving you this time.”
Count your way to freedom. Count your way to confidence.
